Maori Wood Carving. Maori Hand-Carved Wakahuia Original. Made from Native Timber. 500mm x 110mm. Carvings can vary slightly depending on the carver. Wakahuia were used by Maori as carved wooden containers for valued Taonga (Treasures) and personal possessions such as short jade clubs and wooden flutes. Some were made specially to hold the white-tipped black tail feathers of the now extinct Huia bird (hence the name Waka-Huia) or bone needles and spear tips, and also carvings. Wakahuia were highly prized as chiefly symbols and are the personal jewel boxes of classic Maori culture. |
