| M05081 - Hand Carved Wooden Original Wakahuia (Maori Feather Box) |
| Wood Carving. This Wakahuia (feather box) was hand-carved from New Zealand native timber, matai. It measures 390mm x 110mm. Wakahuia were used by Maori as containers for valued personal possessions such as short jade clubs and wooden flutes. Some were made specially to hold the white-tipped black tail feathers of the now extinct huia bird. Wakahuia were highly prized as chiefly symbols and are the personal jewel boxes of classic Maori culture. |
