Sports Trophy Taonga Whakapapa - Petanque - M05111
This Taonga is carved of 2000 year old totara. It was sourced from the forest of Pureora. It comes in the form of a mere (battle axe). This Meres form is staying in its pure state with no carving design covering it. It symbolizes the natural beauty, grace and awe of our Tupuna (Ancestor) Tanemahuta (God of the Forest). As in the story of creation he is seen here through the spiritual eye of Whakairo (Traditional Carving) separating his parents Rangi (Sky Father) on left and Papatuanuku (Earth Mother) on right. They are the foundation on which Tanemahuta (God of the Forest) is placed. They are the foundation our peoples Marae (Village-Castles), Hapu (Village People) and existence. The pattern work covering Ranginui (Sky Father) and Papatuanuku (Sky Father) represents their Wairua (Spiritual Essence). Which is the Wairua (Spiritual Essence), Whakapapa (Geneology) and faith that has brought the Ngati Tuwharetoa people into existence.
